Assessing damage and working to reset the stage of a beloved vacation abode is one thing; managing a hotel filled with guests is a different and far more complex situation.

When the storm hit, Bonnamain immediately sprang to action, deploying what he later called "common sense" relief efforts. Bonnamain had previously worked in Puerto Rico, so he had seen severe tropical storms before — granted, nothing like this.

Still, he maintains that one of the most valuable things he did required no experience at all: Simply listening. And people needed that. In Bonnamain's mind, the hurricane also revealed the true colors and depth of character of his fellow team members. It was empowering.

Restoration After Devastation

Bonnamain himself had to wear different hats during the rebuilding process as well. Over the past 10 months, he's had to dive into the world of insurance, construction, architectural design, even fundraising — the latter a result of establishing a relief fund for team members whose homes were damaged in the storm. Renovations include a redesigned landscape, new restaurant concepts including a swim-up bar, along with a revitalized spa and wellness center and guest room enhancements.

This new school was eventually named in honor of John William Randolph.

The Randolph School was unique. While most Rosenwald Schools were typically one-room wooden schoolhouses, the Randolph School was constructed in an elegant U-shape. It was a source of pride for the black community and provided exceptional schooling and mentoring for students. Afterwards, it was primarily used for storage.

While still standing, the building suffered heavy flooding and collapsed walls. Hurricane Katrina devastated the Randolph School, but miraculously the structure remained standing. The outlook for the storied schoolhouse was dire, and its future viability was uncertain.

Yet, the community of Pass Christian, including school alumni and city leaders, did not want the Randolph School and its significant history to disappear forever. The city ultimately found a need the Randolph School could fulfill. At this time, there was funding available through the Mississippi government to replace senior activities lost in Katrina.

Reconstruction on the building began in After replacing the roof and floors, reconstructing large portions of the exterior walls, and rebuilding the courtyard, the Randolph School opened to the community four years later. The Randolph School has become a community center.
